I Love You

That’s right, I love you. Shocked? Happy? Confused? I know. I totally get where you are coming from, it is just that I do not understand why we are conditioned to place so much meaning on those three words.<

Someone could tell me ‘I treasure you’ and nothing much will be made out of it. In fact someone will send me a text with the words ‘I miss you’ or “I like you’ and life goes on. But the day he decides to go all ‘I love you’ on me, the scenario takes a swift u-turn. It is almost as if he said ‘I hate you’.

Really, does it have to be like that?

Why is it hard to tell people who you should naturally love that you, indeed, love them? People like mum and dad, people who live with the assumption that you love each other.

Why do we want to reduce the effect of the words ‘I love you’ in texts?

If it is not ‘I luv u’ or ‘lav u’, it is ‘Lv u lots’ or ‘lve you’ or even ‘mob luv’; just so long as the whole word does not pop out there by mistake. It gets more preposterous when every other word in the text is not abbreviated, even longer words than love, but when it gets to that part, the shortening comes in handy.

First, it is a crime against the English language and second it is just plain plastic.

Phone calls are even funnier. The conversation could take the whole evening then when the goodbye part draws closer, the lovebirds’ voices take a turn for the low and the one who says ‘I love you’ first ensures that the other says it back, even if by some slight coercion.

And who said that you only love someone who loves you back? Or the most common scenario; tell someone you love them because they said the same thing to you? Really, who are we kidding?

So what if I love you? Isn’t that what I am supposed to do? I am not innocent in all these by the way, just thinking out loud, specifically because there will be a lot of this going around next week.

Do not let this ruin Valentine’s Day for you by thinking too much; somehow, I manage to ruin mine all the time, maybe because I have this fairy tale idea of what love is. Then maybe again it is just because I will not settle for less than what I believe love is.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! (No sarcasm intended)

And just in case you are wondering, I do love you, it was not a test. Plus I am not hinting at anyone, trust me on this one.

Saw this on a friend’s status update and thought that it is probably the hardest thing to practice ever, but why not if you love each other?
