To Whom Much Is Given... - Thoughts and Stuff

To Whom Much Is Given…

shikungigi

Another week down. Lots of lessons learnt. Lots of food for thought. This will be short.

You harbour dreams of scaling the corporate ladder or birthing a very successful business. You dream of being able to drive the best cars and provide for your family. But do you ever think of the responsibilities that come with more? The responsibilities that come with a raise or a promotion?

I thought about the opening words when someone mentioned a raise to me. Then a friend told me about how a problem arose at work and her boss was raving mad. But she accepted full responsibility because she filled bigger shoes recently.

47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. Luke 12

Jesus said these words right after talking about the servants who the master finds keeping watch and ready. How we must always be ready. Kaa chonjo. Then he spoke about the servant who begins to misuse his powers when the master his away. And how he will be punished when the master comes back when he least expects it. This guy to whom all responsibility is bequeathed, knowing full well the master’s will and yet does little to fulfil it will be beaten like there’s no tomorrow. But that ignorant guy who does the same thing will just receive a few lashes.

That’s why you hear people talking about bucks stopping with certain people. The buck stops with the president, they say. The buck stops with the cabinet secretary. Then you ask yourself, poor guy, what can he really do when the people down there are not doing their work? Well, that’s exactly why he is in that position, to ensure that people who do not know what they are supposed to do, do. Same thing happens to first-born children. Ahem. You are the one who made your mum a mother, so there’s a reason she expects more than she expects from the last-born. If you Google the meaning of the phrase “the buck stops here” you will discover it has an interesting history. Back when poker was very popular in public places, the thing that emerged to determine who had the right to deal cards was called a “buck”. So people would pass the buck. The phrase “the buck stops here” was mostly popularized by Harry S. Truman. The same US president whose middle initial didn’t really stand for any name. I am telling you US presidents have interesting stories.

Anyway, my love for history just got me down a winding path of diversion. Accept responsibility. Be prepared for responsibility ahead. We’re young and will not keep growing any younger. If you want more, be prepared to have people demand more from you.
