The Author

Sit through two sermons in a span of four hours and if you do not walk out in the middle of either of them, you should not let the day end without spreading the word. Here I am. It’s been a while since I preached anyway.

For the longest time, I’ve harboured the dream of being an author. I know, not news, Shiku. Fine. Anyway, that’s my dream job. It’s one of the security questions I fill every time I forget my Apple password which happens to be every single time I need to log into iTunes. Old age. Every single time I ask myself why I am not an author already and every single time I answer myself — I’m not there yet. So when will I ever be? When will I know I am ready? I believe I just will. After all, the story is being written even as I write this. If I need a quick launchpad, this is probably it. Combine all the posts here into a book. Right? I mean, why not?

Anyhuuuuu, why am I talking about Shiku being an author? Wasn’t I supposed to be preaching? For the longest time, I’ve known this verse by heart:

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. ~ Hebrews 12:1-2

But never in all those years have I actually thought of what it means. Jesus being the author of our faith. My faith. My life. Being a writer, in whichever form is an interesting thing. When I start writing, I never know what the end result will be. And I can never know unless I start writing and finish. We all make decisions. Sometimes we stick with those decisions, sometimes not so much. God made the decision to write this story. Your story. My story. He didn’t look back. Cue in Francesca Battistelli, Write Your Story. I didn’t even know I was going to bring her up when I started writing this. Sunday’s first preacher made me see that verse in that different light.

Enter preacher number two, after a session of Kigooco with Paul Waiganjo, Sarah W Kimunyi among others. I promise I will not write any Kikuyu words this time. This preacher was like a toned down version of Pastor JJ Gitahi and Pastor Kuria combined. Add stories punctuating his every point and mimicking Kikuyu women and you have the complete package. His message was on faith and how Satan’s entry point into shaking our faith is doubt. Think about it. Every time you doubt something or someone, that’s when you begin to lose faith in them.

So I joined the two sermons together into one. Faith is necessary to allow God to write your story. And if you’re not fully in it, if you have not thrown off the “casual” sins that so easily entangle, you might as well not be in the faith. So, as He writes His story, let this literal story be a reminder. Don’t look at me, look at Him.
